Readers looking for stories about our faithful four-legged friends will find them in Chicken Soup for the Soul: My Dog’s Life, released in April. Included in the volume is T’Mara Goodsell’s heartwarming “The Last Gift,” a story about the day the author met a chocolate Labrador that she came to think of as Brown Lucy. Goodsell encountered the Lab in a stable, where she had gone to see a friend’s new horse. She and the dog bonded immediately, and the gifts Brown Lucy bestowed—the gift of a few minutes, the gift of an invaluable lesson—are things T’Mara will never forget. Goodsell’s stories have been published in anthologies, newspapers, and online, and her poetry won first place in a regional contest in 2010, but though her work has addressed a variety of topics, one of her special gifts is writing about our canine companions. “That is, after all, what a dog’s heart is,” she contends. “A gift.”

Another entry in Chicken Soup for the Soul: My Dog’s Life is Cathi LaMarche’s “Their Trust, Our Privilege,” an inspirational tale of LaMarche’s experiences adopting shelter dogs. When she first met Dexter, a two-year-old Collie mix, the dog looked at her with sad eyes from within a chain-link cage. It took Dexter a little time to adjust after the author took him home. Similarly, Penny, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, also had initial trust issues. “Moving to our home was a setback for her,” remarks Cathi. “Once again we watched a dog slink from the dark corners of the house for a meal or a trip outside.” LaMarche is passionate about shelter animals, and she balances this affinity with writing her second novel. Her debut novel, While the Daffodils Danced, was published in 2005. “Their trust in us is our reward and privilege,” she adds of Dexter and Penny. “If only they knew how much I believe in the value of an unwanted dog.”

In keeping with the pet theme is Chicken Soup for the Soul: My Cat’s Life, which features Theresa Sanders’ “The Miracle Kitty,” a story about her father-in-law Max’s cat, Tigger, and how Tigger helped the family grieve after Max died. “Tigger was an inspiration to all of us,” says Sanders, an award-winning technical writer who made the transition to creative writing years ago and has never looked back. Currently working on a novel, she had a previous novel place as a finalist in a national competition, but her Chicken Soup for the Soul stories are close to her heart.

In Chicken Soup for the Soul: Devotional Stories for Tough Times, released October 4th, Theresa Sanders offers “The Rainbow Child,” an account of her nephew Erik’s autism, and how the affliction has affected her sister’s family. “I wanted to bring to light not only the struggles of Erik and his parents,” Theresa explains, “but also their triumphs. That is the power of story.”

Linda O’Connell knows all about the power of story. One of St. Louis’ most versatile and widely published authors, O’Connell has seen her award-winning writing appear in numerous anthologies and newspapers. In 2009, her work was a “Poetry in Motion” contest winner and was printed on posters displayed on city buses and trains. In “A Blast for the Past,” from Chicken Soup for the Soul: Food and Love, releasing November 22nd, O’Connell shows readers her humorous side, telling of a recent trip to an inner-city deli, where she spotted a long-lost love: a scrumptious chunk of apple-walnut cake. As she sat and ate at a retro wooden table, she couldn’t help thinking back to her past. Every forkful of the luscious cake resurrected happy memories of her late friend Rose and their antics—one antic in particular. “Rose’s recipe had just the right combination of a smooth, coffee-cake texture, crunchy nuts, and fresh fruit,” Linda recalls. “We declared it healthy and nibbled on it for days. It was one of our simple indulgences.”
